"Translaw" in Belgium: a Qualitative Comparative Study on the Perception of Communication with Foreign Detainees

Boekbijdrage - Hoofdstuk

According to the annual report of the Belgian Directorate General of Peni-tentiary Institutions of 2017 , more than half of detainees are Belgians (56%), which means that the remaining 44% are foreigners from more than 130 countries. According to the World Prison Brief , Belgium occupies the 9th place out of 56 entries in Europe regarding foreign populations in pris-ons. The scope of this paper is not to find out why this is the case but to understand the service path of these non-Belgian detainees in the Belgian prison system. More specifically, through nine interviews with them, we will focus on the right to an interpreter as stipulated in Directive 2010/64/EU since it is key to understanding and therefore also key to the right to information.
