Short-run impacts of COVID-19 on the maritime and port sector

Boekbijdrage - Hoofdstuk

Ondertitel:measures and recommended policies
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a big impact on the maritime sector and on ports: in different waves, production and related goods flows came to a halt, ports themselves had to go in quarantaine, while later on, there was a rebound in demand with ship and container capacities being insufficient or wrongly positioned in the world. Governments have taken short-run measures to overcome the crisis, but the reaction overall has been very dispersed, leading to additional problems in transportation, at border crossings for instance. The biggest lack of co-ordinated action however was felt by seafarers, who were stuck at sea much longer than their contracts allowed, without access to vaccination or their families. It remains to be seen who will be the winners of this crisis in the port and maritime sector: which and how many operators will go bankrupt when government support disappears again post-COVID?
