De Sahara in Lommel: geen korstmoswoestijn

Tijdschriftbijdrage - Tijdschriftartikel

Ondertitel:Verslag van de lichenologische excursie op 9/11/2019
The Lommel Sahara is a 193 ha large dune and degraded heathland area in the
Province of Limburg. It is a restored brownfield (former zinc factory) with in the
middle a lake and surrounded by planted pine forests in an effort to stabilise the sandy soil. The area is currently a EU Natura 2000 area, managed by the Flemish Agency for Nature and Forest. The Lommel Sahara is clearly not a lichen desert. During the excursion of 9 November 2019, not less than 72 species (66 lichens and 6 lichenicolous fungi) were found. The largest species diversity was not on the ground (12 species), but on trees (42 species). The following species are discussed in detail: Buellia griseovirens, Stereocaulon condensatum and Usnea cf. subfloridana as well as some differences between species that can be confused: Parmeliopsis ambigua viz. Flavoparmelia soredians and Trapelia coarctata viz. T. glebulosa.
