Towards Tangible AI: Exploring Transparency, Control, and Social Dynamics of Graspable Interactions with Movie Recommender Systems

Artificial Intelligence (AI) drives many of our daily activities and decisions. Unfortunately, academics have reported various negative experiences with personalized recommendation systems, such as lack of awareness, transparency, and control. While current research is mostly focused on Graphic User Interfaces (GUIs), little research has been done on more novel interfaces, such as Tangible User Interfaces (TUIs), to enhance the interaction with these systems. TUIs open another unexplored area: the relevance of and the design for these systems' social dynamics. We propose quantitative and qualitative methods paired with a human-centered design approach to develop a TUI able to interact with a movie recommendation systems (MRS), following an iterative approach to uncover: (1) transparency and control TUI design guidelines, (2) design guidelines to foster collaborative interactions with TUIs, and (3) the effects of TUIs in the social dynamics of AI systems such as MRS.
