Ultrasound Assisted Continuous Crystallization of Pharmaceutical Compounds

Boek - Dissertatie

The pharmaceutical market is nearly a trillion dollar industry worldwide. Crystallization is a crucial separation process that is used to refine a large number of pharmaceutical compounds. It is a step in the production process which defines many of the important properties of the medicine to be produced. Flow crystallization is an emerging technique, being adopted by multiple industrial pharmaceutical producers because of its benefits like small variability in products, safe operation, small control volumes, less wastage, better efficiency etc. Ultrasound is a process intensification technique that has shown improvement in process efficiency in batch systems. Coupling flow systems with ultrasound is an area with a wide scope for research. Investigation of flow sonocrystallization, although available in literature, is still not sufficient. Furthermore, investigation with respect to the combination of flow, ultrasound and anti - solvent crystallization for polymorph control is scarce. Combining flow crystallization with ultrasound offers multiple benefits, although it is not without challenges. When the aim is also to have polymorph control, the complexity of such a system increases. This justifies the need for extensive experimentation and investigation to study such systems. The goal of this Ph.D. is to investigate the combination of flow, anti - solvent crystallization and ultrasound and take these systems one step further towards large scale application.
