Comparison and performance assessment of ozone-based AOPs in view of trace organic contaminants abatement in water and wastewater : a review

Tijdschriftbijdrage - Review Artikel

Trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) have been increasingly found in the aquatic environment and their potential health risk on human and wildlife has attracted more attention. Ozone-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are a key technology for the removal of TrOCs from water and wastewater. This review provides an overview of current research and technology development regarding the application of ozone-based AOPs for TrOCs abatement. Performance of ozonation as a stand-alone process, as well as combined processes, including O-3/H2O2, O-3/UV, O-3/catalysts, O-3/plasma and O-3/filtration for the removal of TrOCs in various types of (waste) water is discussed. Furthermore, this review also analyzes the main mechanisms of oxidation by-products generation and compares and discusses the energy consumption during the application of ozone-based AOPs.
