Introduction: The Mobile Landscape of Post-War Architectural Thought

Boekbijdrage - Hoofdstuk

Editorial 1. How would you rate the value of the work: a) To research in the field? This is a serious and original contribution to research around the theoretical discourses of architecture. It offers a new perspective on the processes by which architectural discourse has been generated, and suggests many ideas for future exploration. b) To student courses? The book would be of significant value on Masters level courses in architecture, and some of the essays would be read on undergraduate programmes. c) To professionals? It would be of limited interest to practitioners, though the occasionally theoretically-informed practitioner with time to spare might find some of the essays useful. 2. Please comment on the proposal, responding to the points noted below: a) The approach/rationale? The rationale is very clear: whereas most recent writing on architectural theory has been concerned with the 'what'-what has been said and written-this book is concerned with the 'how'-how theory has been developed and transmitted. b) The content? The content is very wide-ranging, and the individual essays cover a variety of different themes. Translation; exchanges with other disciplines (philosophy, theology); transfers from practice to theory and back again; international circulation of ideas, and the resulting transformations and resistances. These are just a few of the themes, any one of which might receive book-length treatment. The sheer variety, held together by a basic organising idea, is what makes this an attractive proposal. c) The organization of the proposal? The proposal is coherently organized into two distinct sections. d) The writing style of the proposal? The proposal itself is clearly written and jargon-free. It would remain to be seen what the individual essays would be like. e) The quality and breadth of the case material? 'Case material' is the very substance of the book-a tremendous breadth of different cases of theory's emergence and transmission. The arguments follow from the cases, so they are fundamental to the composition of the book. f) The quality and breadth of the references and sources? Likewise, the range of sources is impressive, both in international extent, and in types of media studied. 3. Please detail your specific recommendations for the revision of the proposal.
