The EU-Turkey migration Deal and the externalisation of migration policy

Tijdschriftbijdrage - Tijdschriftartikel

With the 2016 EU-Turkey Migration Deal the EU Member States engaged in a partial externalisation of their asylum and migration policy, shifting the burden of offering asylum to certain applicants for international protection to Turkey. This approach shows similarities with the Australian 'Pacific Solution', where applications are off-shored to other countries. This externalisation process raises moral, practical, financial and legal concerns. Replying to both the need for protection of the individual, while managing the impact of high influx of irregular migrants is a delicate exercise.
