A Brief Approach of Microgrids Implementation in Ecuador: A Review

Boekbijdrage - Boekhoofdstuk Conferentiebijdrage

Population growth brings different challenges worldwide where those related to electricity consumption stand out. Providing access to electricity in remote areas becomes a new challenge for distribution utilities, especially in developing countries where large numbers of the population live in rural areas. Microgrids can play an important role in solving this problem since they can provide a sustainable generation to these areas without depending on a connection to the national electrification network. In this context, Ecuador is a country that has numerous natural resources, which could be used to generate electricity from renewable energy sources, especially solar photovoltaic and wind energy. However, the use of these types of renewable energy sources in Ecuador has not been exploited to its full potential. Therefore, this paper presents a brief review regarding the use and implementation of renewable energy sources, including microgrid solutions, as part of the Ecuador’s Interconnected National System. A description of the energy resources in Ecuador and a review of the main studies related to energy issues carried out in Ecuador are presented. This study describes the main policies and laws in force for implementing microgrids in Ecuador. Finally, a discussion related to the feasibility of the inclusion of energy solutions based on microgrids for isolated rural areas of Ecuador is provided.
