De complexe transfer van beelden en grenzen

Boekbijdrage - Hoofdstuk

This contribution applies a number of imagological findings and concepts to the Dutch-language area. Because of the transnational character of the language area, this includes several perspectives, which makes the exercise often difficult. After all, national states and national borders often are the basis for an analysis and for image building. Yet, both from a historical and a political point of view, the Low Countries show a heterogeneous character. As such, the principle of an imagologically homogeneous presentation is usually secondary to dual or confrontational presentations and frames, such as North-South or protestant-catholic. The state border between the Netherlands and Flanders turns out to be crucial to the image building, even if the latter is often not based on facts. Moreover, nationally based media representation patterns contribute to the confrontational images.
