Exploring strategies to reduce toxicity in the multimodal treatment of oesophageal cancer

Boek - Dissertatie

Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy followed by surgery is considered standard of care in the treatment of locally advanced oesophageal cancer. Although this treatment strategy has demonstrated a survival benefit, the combination of radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgery is associated with considerable morbidity and toxicity-related mortality. Therefore, the general aim of this research project was to optimise and individualise the radiotherapy treatment in patients with locally advanced oesophageal cancer, in order to reduce treatment-related toxicity without compromising tumour control. In the first part of this PhD thesis, the shortcomings in the radiotherapy treatment with photons were investigated. In the second part, we addressed several issues on how to standardise and optimise the radiation treatment in oesophageal cancer patients.
