Fenêtres sur une architecture de l'épaisseur et de la profondeur: une étude des fortifications de Cambrai par le 'dessin critique séquentiel (Windows into an Architecture of Darkness and Depth through critical sequential drawing).

This article provides insights in the research procedures as developed and applied by AOB Studio Anatomy KU Leuven Faculty of Architecture on the fortifications of Château de Celles (Cambrai, France). The thickness of the architectural body of Château de Selles permitted the researchers to do their research with the cutting of window openings as the central theme of this project. The window, here, has been the reason to make incisions in the architectural body and has to be understood as both a ventilation device and as an instrument to look and see. The article explains how critical sequential drawing (CSD) consists of the elaborated combination of the following drawing techniques: Chronological Drawing, X-Ray-Drawing and annotated drawing can be applied in order to anatomise and hence investigate the material and spatial conditions of the masses and voids of the fortifications of Cambrai. For Studio Anatomy drawing is also a way of questioning the architectural construction and its mediation. It is an exploratory journey into depths of unveiling perspectives of the architectural drawing and the craftsmanship of the architect beyond today. Although indispensable to anatomise, drawing sections is not limited to the common vertical section. It includes fascination drawing (embodying and perceiving), cinematic drawing (detection of points of (p)reference in a site), proposition drawing (reflective design analysis of the own drawing), … n-drawings, applied to explore the meaning of drawing and the new gateways and avenues drawing can generate for normative architectural drawing and its risk of stagnation. The article brings to the fore how the logic and rationale of data collecting and data processing combined with intuition and imagination are key elements at work in processes of architectural creation.
