Women gamers

The entry focuses on the concept of women gamers. Starting from the invisibility of the female gamer different perspectives and studies are discussed in relation to gender and gaming with specific attention toward the construction of the women gamer. First studies ignored women gamers, later studies focus on the gender differences of gamers in relation to motivations, gratification, play, and preferences. Studies also exclusively focus on the female gamer with an interest in the identification of women as gamers and the different positions towards this layered identification, which often comes with difficulties such as dislike, sexism, and even violence as illustrated by the #Gamergate controversy.
