Struvite recovery from domestic wastewater

Boekbijdrage - Hoofdstuk

Worldwide, large amounts of phosphorus (P) rock are consumed annually in intensive agriculture and industry. P can be recovered from the ashes of mono-incinerated sludge, from concentrated wastewater streams such as sludge water of dewatered digested sludge, or from digested sludge. The precipitation of orthophosphate as struvite (magnesium-ammonium-phosphate) is one of the most common P recovery strategies. Once recovered, struvite can be used in agriculture as a slow-release fertilizer. A P recovery technique was tested at the wastewater treatment plants of Leuven, where a full-scale demonstration plant of struvite recovery from digested sludge was used for the first time on sludge instead of water. The chapter also discusses process description, analyses and tests, operational benefits, economic evaluation, and future challenges of phosphorus recovery from domestic wastewater.
