Quality and Innovation in TESOL Blended and Distance Education

Boekbijdrage - Hoofdstuk

While the concept of quality standards has been variously defined more recently attention has turned to the concept of quality improvement, whereby generic benchmarking is used to monitor quality improvement. The concepts of performance indicators, benchmarking, and process improvement are central to such approaches, and the continuous quality improvement (CQI) framework has been introduced as “a quality management approach to continuously improve the efficiency and effectiveness of all aspects of education.” Language teaching has been defined by ongoing processes of technological and pedagogical innovation, and the integration of ICT and digitalization (such as use of digital platforms, mobile learning, distance learning, and blended learning) have been important trends in TESOL education. Yet little attention has been given to the kinds of standards and frameworks required to ensure the quality of education including in relation to innovation. This chapter provides a critical commentary on the processes of innovation in technology-mediated language education, including blended and distance education. The chapter also provides an account of how the CQI framework can be applied to identify, describe, and analyze the quality of teaching and learning in technology-mediated environments.
