Decommissioning and Reuse of Churches: Research Perspectives and Challenges. Introduction

Boekbijdrage - Boekhoofdstuk Conferentiebijdrage

The phenomena of underutilization, decommissioning and reuse of religious heritage are considered key issues by ecclesiastical institutions, research centers and others working in the realms of culture. The social, economic and technical dynamics that are caused by these phenomena are relevant not only for the ecclesial milieu but for all of society. It is a matter for the shared responsibility of all citizens. The international conference on decommissioning places of worship and integrated management of cultural heritage – the materials of which are presented in the first section of this volume – provided a good opportunity for a dialogue between ecclesial considerations and academic research, with an exchange of objectives, methods and results. In order to encourage the encounter between researchers and ecclesial subjects, the institutions that conceived the conference promoted an international call – coordinated by the Responsible Risk Resilience Centre (PoliTo, R3C) at the Polytechnic of Turin – aimed at surveying interdisciplinary research projects on the subject, focusing on architectural and urban issues, but also based on studies of the social and theological-pastoral sciences. This introduction reflects upon the submissions and suggests furhter lines of inquiry.
