Project

Een studie naar de effecten van blootstelling aan online celebrity bashing bij adolescente omstaanders op korte en lange termijn.

This project covers a study on a very specific, though, prominent type of online aggression: online celebrity bashing. Celebrity bashing refers to the negative and scandal-inspired way of commenting toward and about celebrities, and can be performed by journalists, the audience and other celebrities. This project aims to enrich our knowledge on this phenomenon by investigating what happens both in the short and in the long run, when adolescent bystanders are regularly confronted with this practice online. More specifically, we will investigate the causal link between being a bystander of the different types of celebrity bashing and becoming a perpetrator, and the role of attitudes as mediating variable within this relationship. This project will build on previous research on celebrity bashing, taking into account their main shortcoming, namely their cross-sectional nature. By making use of a daily diary method and a self-constructed app that will be used to collect the data, we will be able to gain insights into adolescents' confrontation with celebrity bashing and the potential influences on their own behavior in the long run and in a natural context. This project will increase our insights on the impact of celebrity bashing on adolescents and celebrities, and thus provide evidence for the development of effective prevention and intervention initiatives.
