Size and shape effect in shrinkage based on chemo-mechanical simulations

Boekbijdrage - Boekhoofdstuk Conferentiebijdrage

Due to safety demands and growing sustainability requirements, sound knowledge concerning the long-time performance of infrastructures becomes more relevant. The structure's long-term performance depends on different processes such as aging, shrinkage, as well as creep independently and in interaction. As widely known, the time-dependent behavior of concrete is influenced by the mix design and the environmental boundary conditions, which are ambient temperature and humidity. These determine the hydration reactions, the resulting temperature rise, and the drop in internal available water which in turn drive thermal strains, hygral shrinkage, creep and influence the spatial distribution of material properties. Objective of this contribution is the evaluation of code suggestions for the analysis of shrinkage in structural members compared to full 3D numerical multi-physics simulations. First the effects of size on the shrinkage evolution are investigated, followed by a study of cross-sections with substantially different effective thicknesses.
