Yet another failed state? The Huizinga-Pirenne controversy on the Burgundian state reconsidered

Johan Huizinga and Henri Pirenne were the best known historians of their generation in respectively the Netherlands and Belgium. For both the reigns of the Valois dukes of Burgundy (1384-1477) was central to their work. However, théy had very different looks on the importance of the so-called Burgundian 'state': this chapter explores the reasons why and how both these views have continued to fuel debate among historians.
