An Interactive Knowledge Base Application for Group Assignment

Boekbijdrage - Boekhoofdstuk Conferentiebijdrage

The aim of this work is to research how well the IDP system, developed at KU Leuven, functions in an interactive context. The IDP system is an implementation of the knowledge base paradigm (KBP), meaning that it stores its information in a knowledge base, to which it can apply inference methods to solve problems. To test the functionality in an interactive context, an interactive application for group assignment of students was developed. The research is divided in two steps. As a first step, we took a closer look at how to implement a group assignment algorithm using the IDP system. The implementation consists of two parts: the coarse initial group distribution based on residence and former high school, and the refined incremental distribution which takes student preferences into account. Each preference has its own adjustable priority. As a second step, we developed an application around this IDP implementation. The application uses Qt5 to construct a Graphical User Interface (GUI) and the Pyidp3 API to communicate with the IDP system. In this way the IDP system forms the application’s backend. The use of the IDP system ensures the intelligence of our application and the GUI and Pyidp3 provide a userfriendly interface. Before making an initial group layout, it is possible to change the parameters of the system, such as the group size and the amount of groups. For the additional assignment, it is possible to add preferences with a priority, to make one’s own priorities, to have multiple next solutions be calculated and have the IDP system show the differences between the current and a new layout.
