Jacobi's idee van God

Jacobi’s challenge to Enlightenment ideals played a prominent role in the development of German idealism, but his philosophy has not been widely studied in both the German- and English-speaking worlds. According to Jacobi, human reason is incapable of knowing God who embodies perfectly the true and the good. Bollnow discusses Jacobi’s conceptions of God and faith within the context of Jacobi’s moral philosophy. None of the existing commentaries, however, deal specifically with Jacobi’s idea of God with respect to his antirationalism. The research project I propose aims to develop the first systematic explication of Jacobi’s conception of God in the English-speaking world. In the first two parts of the project, I will explain the sources of Jacobi’s philosophy. The third part of the project focuses on Jacobi’s critique of reason. The fourth part deals with Jacobi’s idea of God and how, according to Jacobi, God is the presupposition of human reason. The final part of the project concerns Jacobi’s concept of faith with regard to his idea of God.
