Predictors of exact arithmetic and computational estimation in Kindergarten

Boekbijdrage - Boekhoofdstuk Conferentiebijdrage

The current study investigates which general cognitive functions and early numerical skills are predictive of kindergartners' exact arithmetic and computational estimation performance six months later. Results show that intelligence, verbal counting, and number ordering skills are important predictors for both exact arithmetic and computational estimation. Secondly, symbolic comparison was only predictive of exact arithmetic, whereas verbal working memory only played a role in computational estimation. These results suggest that kindergartners' exact arithmetic and computational estimation do not rely on exactly the same processes.
