Internet of Robotic Things: context-aware and personalized interventions of assistive social robots

Boekbijdrage - Boekhoofdstuk Conferentiebijdrage

Assistive service and companion robots are versatile and dexterous actuators that operate in our daily living environ- ment. These robots are able to manipulate physical objects, to displace themselves and to engage in conversations via text-to- speech or tele-presence. The support from a cloud back-end is crucial for such robotic systems to i) analyze data from sensor and wearables and determine appropriate assistive and social robotic tasks to be executed and ii) provide the necessary support to execute these actions in our daily living environment, which is subject to dynamism and uncertainty due to human presence. In this paper, we first present our vision on the general challenges for the realization of such an Internet-of-Robotic-Things paradigm. We then present our system architecture design for a case study on personal interactions by a companion robot to alleviate behavioral disturbances of people with dementia.
