Finding shared ambitions to design for change

Little by little, a growing awareness of the ecological impact of creating and adapting the built environment is cementing in place buildings’ long-term value as an undeniable design constraint. Reviewing in this chapter the design of the AZ Groeninge hospital reveals a series of challenges and opportunities that are introduced by that constraint.

AZ Groeninge, built on the outskirts of the Belgian city of Kortrijk, had the ambition to be a hospital that is ready for the future. Knowing that the future is uncertain however, Baumschlager Eberle Architecten and OSAR Architects had to redesign their way of designing. Retelling the story of the architectural consortium reveals how their assumptions were challenged and how shared visions and ambitions became crucial. The spatial, structural and technical concepts that rely on that visions and ambitions, and that are detailed in this chapter, are a textbook example of designing for change. The context-sensitive combination of a capacious support and an adaptable fit-out the designers were able to create already demonstrated the building its ability to maintain valuable during both its design and construction.
