Practices and Modes of Transatlantic Data Processing: From Sorting Countries to Sorting Individuals

Boekbijdrage - Hoofdstuk

This chapter calls for an increase in the attention of policy makers, civil societies and academics to the relatively 'invisible' issues behind these forms of data-processing. In particular, the prominently technological aspect of the second mode of conceptualizing mobilities, and the related practices, should not overshadow the need for political debate. These practices are not free of side-effects, nor can the technological systems set up be neutral. Such a position is not a technophobic, anti-modern stance. Rather, it calls for the adoption of technologies that are both efficient and respectful of human rights.
