Tomas Segovia y la linguistica estructuralista: Ensayos en una dinamica de debate

Tijdschriftbijdrage - Tijdschriftartikel

Ondertitel:Tomas Segovia and structuralist linguistics : trials in a dynamic debate
The dialogue with literary and philosophical tendencies coming from France, Spain and other European countries is a constant in the essays by Tomas Segovia (Valencia 1927 - Mexico 2011). The cultural scene of Europe is not only his main source of inspiration but also provokes his very strong response. These involved reactions can be positive, as in the case of the existentialism by Sartre and Camus, or negative, as in the case of the structuralist linguistics by Saussure and Jakobson. The interaction between Mexico and Europe becomes, according to our hypothesis, a fundamental mechanism to understand the complex identity construction of this essayist, who is from Spanish origin and lived as an exile first in France and later in Mexico. As an illustrative example, we analyze in this study the essays included in the series "Especularia" (1970-1985). The debate on the question about the significance by literary texts is central in these essays. We situate this debate in the context of the French cultural scene in the late sixties and seventies, when structuralist linguistics had succeeded existentialism as a dominant movement and had subsequently provoked controversy among postestructuralists. To analyze the discussion in the essays by Segovia, we rely methodologically on the concept of 'scenography' proposed by Maingueneau and on the ideas by Veron and Garcia Negroni on 'adversative discourse'. The analysis provides tools to examine how Segovia sees the cultural interaction between Europe and Mexico and, in parallel, constructs his own identity.
