From the document to the sublime, there is only one step : boxing with Armando and Alexander Kluge

Boekbijdrage - Hoofdstuk

This is a confrontation of the two multifaceted artists Armando and Alexander Kluge, both of whom are prominent figures in post-war culture. In four consecutive rounds, we detail the background, the poetology, the reception and literary practice of both “interview authors” in terms of a boxing match. We begin by describing Armando’s position in Dutch and European artistic movements and in the literary neo-avant-garde. Then the sublime and his preference for the fragmentary are linked to early Romanticism and we indicate similarities between Armando’s poetics and the ideas of Carl Schmitt. The work that Armando published with Hans Sleutelaar, The SS Men (De SS’ers, 1967), is finally placed in the context of the 1960s. In a second match, similar questions are asked of Kluge’s work, with a special focus on the literary work he published in the 1960s. We situate texts like Case Histories (Lebensläufe) and The Battle (Schlachtbeschreibung) in the context of attempts to confront Germany with its recent past. Kluge’s relationship to the avant-garde is profiled through his programmatic contribution to the development of New German Cinema. In conclusion, we provide a brief overview of the reception of both authors’ work and the way in which critics evaluate their oeuvre. Both authors partake in the neo-realist and documentary trends of the 1960’s, but increasingly transcend this paradigm in keeping with their diverging ideological tenets.
