Telling the story. A curation-driven approach to image metadata improvement and development

Having contributed about half a million early photographic images to Europeana, our public/private non-profit association Photoconsortium is now involved in making this content accessible to a wide, layered audience. Our approach is driven by content selection and curation with a view to creating strong and engaging narratives. These are presented by Europeana on a web platform dedicated to ‘thematic collections’, and hosting editorial features such as exhibitions, galleries, browse entry points and blogposts. In this paper we will discuss our efforts to develop thematic digital heritage collections on Photography and Migration, and the pitfalls we encounter in moving from concept to concrete publication. An important issue is the difficulty of searching large collections based on the currently available metadata. We therefore continuously develop strategies and methodologies to refine, enrich and develop metadata, following the requirements of story-oriented curation.
