A psychic tale of end of exile

Tijdschriftbijdrage - Tijdschriftartikel

Ondertitel:"White on green" by Julia Uceda
"Blanco sobre verde" is the short story that ends the literary period of Julia Uceda's exile. In this psychological short story, the author resolves the identity conflict between her former self, grounded in the Spanish Postwar period, and her present self, constructed in exile. Following Carl G. Jung's theoretical foundations regarding individuation, we examine the process of psychic overcoming in this short story. Furthermore, given the similarities between "Blanco sobre verde" and Julia Uceda's biography, we suggest that this short story may be understood as a work of autofiction. Consequently, we analyze "Blanco sobre verde" as a dual narrative, in which supernatural elements accumulate to such a degree that this story- which begins as a realistic account-turns into a fairy tale. The structure of fairy tales shares characteristics with initiation rites; in the case of Uceda's short story, we argue that this narrative framework may be understood as a technique to conceptualize the psychic overcoming of the trauma of the Spanish Postwar.
