Drivers of nonprofit commercialization : resource deficits, institutional pressures or organizational contingencies?

Boekbijdrage - Boekhoofdstuk Conferentiebijdrage

In general, it is assumed that increased resource competition due to New Public Management reforms induced commercial behavior by publically funded nonprofit organizations (NPOs). However, this widespread explanation falls short, as empirical findings on the drivers of nonprofit commercialization remain equivocal and inconclusive. In this paper, we theorize that nonprofit commercialization can emerge from resource deficits, institutional pressures and organizational contingencies. Based on data drawn from a large-N, two-wave survey of 496 NPOs in Belgium, we juxtapose these theoretical frameworks in order to identify the drivers influencing (a) the presence and (b) the intensity of commercial income in NPOs by means of binary logistical regression.
