'Vlaamse substantie'. Georg Hermanowski herbekeken

Tijdschriftbijdrage - Tijdschriftartikel

This is a reappraisal of the role of Georg Hermanowski as cultural mediator between Flanders and Germany. After having discovered Flanders during WWII, Hermanowski made the translation and distribution of Flemish literature in Germany his cause. However, his image of Flemish culture was quite one-sided, focussing mainly on the more traditional, catholic literature, a fact for which he was severely criticized by a number of Belgian intellectuals. If some this criticism was partly justified, Hermanowski's achievements should not be discarded completely, as he eventually introduced Maurice Gilliams or Ivo Michiels to German audiences.
