Empirical research on security and privacy by design - What (not) to expect as a researcher or a reviewer

In practice, however, adoption is relatively slow, especially for techniques and methods in the early software engineering phases (requirements elicitation, architecture and design). Yet it is precisely in these early design phases that the security-by-design (and privacy-by-design) principles are expected to yield substantial returns on investment: a little extra early development effort may avoid lots of late re-engineering efforts.
