Reducing Functional Safety and Other Risks Due to EM Disturbances: IEEE, Standard 1848

© 2018 IEEE. IEEE Standard 1848 (draft) deals with the problem of managing safety and any other kinds of risks that could be caused by electromagnetic disturbances. It is impractical to test digital hardware or software sufficiently thoroughly for the low levels of risk required for functional safety-related applications, so this is the first of a new type of EMC standard which has requirements that go well beyond immunity testing. This paper describes these issues, and how this new IEEE standard will achieve its aims. It is an improved and updated version of a paper first presented at the 2016 IEEE EMC Symposium in Ottawa.
