Act, Species, and Appearance: Peter Auriol on Intellectual Cognition and Consciousness

Boekbijdrage - Hoofdstuk

The article examines Peter Auriol's (d. 1322) theory of cognition, placing within it Auriol's particular understanding of the intelligible species and the intellectual act, and particularly exploring how the cognitive process for Auriol culminates in the object of cognition "appearing" to the cognizer. I argue that in his stress on the appearance of the cognized thing, Auriol is shifting attention away from the mechanics of cognition towards what we today would call phenomenal consciousness.
