Van mieke langbeen, heimaai en luiwagen: de benamingen voor de hooiwagen in de zuidelijk-Nederlandse dialecten

Boekbijdrage - Hoofdstuk

The dialect vocabulary for insects and other small animals is often regionally very diverse. This is also the case with the dialect names for the harvestman or harvest spider, a member of the arachnids with very long, thin legs. In this article, we present an overview of the lexical variation in the southern dialects of the Dutch language area for the harvest spider. Via an outline map, based on data from three large regional dialect dictionaries (Dictionaries of Brabantish / Limburgian / Flemish dialects), we focus on the dialect words with the largest geographical spread. We try to formulate some plausible etymological hypotheses by categroizing the heteronyms in different groups, based on the underlying motive for their nomination. The general appearance of the harvest spider is the main motive for naming the creature.
