Towards an orientation of higher education in the post Rio + 20 process: how is the game changing?

The purposeofthispaperistoidentifyandassesstheimplicationsofsustainable developmentforthefutureorientationofhighereducation,especiallyafterthe2012United NationsConferenceonSustainableDevelopment(Rio+20).Aqualitativetrendanalysisis beingusedforthispurpose,inthecontextofwhichthreemacrotrendsarecombined:(1) highereducation thathasbeendevelopedviafiveperiods;(2) sustainabledevelopment that has evolvedthroughthreestages;and(3) thenexusbetweensustainabledevelopmentand highereducation whichhasstrengthenedthroughthreephases.Thesimultaneousanalysisof the macrotrendsregardingtheirpossibleinteractiveeffects(throughanexpertpanel discussion)demonstratesthathighereducationanduniversitiesundertheinfluenceof sustainabledevelopmentelementsareenteringintoanewerainwhichthefunctionof highereducationforsustainabledevelopmentcouldbeinterpretedastheseedsofanewly emergingmissionforuniversities.Inthisregard,itisexpectedthattheconceptof sustainableuniversityislikelytobecomemorecommontomeettheemergingmission. ConsistentwiththeRio+20outcomes,theauthorsanalyzedtheconceptofsustainable universityandidentifiedthefactthatitispracticallydividedintothreeinterrelatedand complementarycategories,namelysocial-,environmental-,andeconomic-oriented universityinpursuitofactualizingsustainabledevelopment.
