Russula rhodomelanea und die Russula-emeticella-Frage

Tijdschriftbijdrage - Tijdschriftartikel

Ondertitel:Russula rhodomelanea and the question of Russula emeticella
Sarnari described Russula rhodomelanea as a greying species of Russula section Piperinae (nom. invalid.) occurring in thermophilic oak forests of southern Europe. In his key, he contrasts this taxon with R. emeticella ss. Romagnesi (1980), interpreting the latter as a species with smaller spores and less distinctly greying context, growing in deciduous forests in western and central Europe. Additional taxa, which have been described either as new or by interpretation of old names, share the same set of basic characters (i.e. acrid taste, white spores, red caps, more or less greying stipe, negative guaiac reaction, and spore ornamentation of medium height). For this article, we examined collections from Germany and France and compared these with species descriptions from literature. Many characters used to delimit species turn out to be too variable to support the recognition of multiple taxa in this tribe. Even discrete and measurable characters (like spore size) show considerable variation and do not support the delimitation of further species. Molecular analysis based on ITS sequences proves that the holotype of the southern European R. rhodomelanea clusters in a clade of French and German specimens, for which the name R. emeticella is currently used. In the discussion on nomenclatural aspects, it is argued that the latter name cannot be applied to this clade and it is suggested to use the name R. rhodomelanea.
