Noord-Zuid en Oost-West sociale bewegingen in België (1968 - 1989-).

Public opinion considers Europeanization and globalization as new phenomena and explains their development by abrupt factors after 1989, such as the opening of borders, the increase of migration and the communication revolution (internet). However, many scholars state that these transnational contacts and identity formation existed already before the end of the Cold War, referring to various social movements with an international orientation to the South (Third World movements) or to the East (peace movements and/or networks with Eastern European dissidents). Other scholars do not tend to agree with this and argue that the nation-state has continued to be the most important context for social mobilization. This research project aims at analyzing the roots of contemporary transnationalism by means of five cases of social movements in Belgium with an international orientation (to Vietnam, Latin America, South Africa, Poland and Ethiopia). By comparing their networks and activities, it will research how transnational identity has developed during (and after) the last two decades of the Cold War.
