Een kritische studie van 2 Sm 11-12: het onderzoeken van afgoderij in de Hebreeuwse bijbel en de culturele implicatie voor de Igbo-gemeenschap

The present research has two primary targets. (a) First is to study themeaning and definition of adultery in the Hebrew bible. Till now, majority of the studies on adultery in the Hebrew bible have concentrated on the punishment for adultery. In addition, scholars have paid little attention to the definition of adultery in the Hebrew bible. Our present approach is aimed at eschewing these tendencies. Thus, our research will give level playing ground to every biblical genre. It is also our target to attempt a comprehensive definition of the concept of adultery in the Hebrew bible. In view of the definition of adultery in the Hebrew bible, we will first examine all the instances of the Hebrew root @an (naaf) inthe Hebrew bible. Interestingly, the Hebrew root @an (naaf) is attestedin all biblical genres which make it a good starting point for a research on the definition of adultery in the Hebrew bible. Second, we will study an instance of adultery in a narrative text. The choice of the narrative text is based on the strength of the sexual encounter that unfolds in the narrative as an adulterous sexual relationship. For this reason, we opted for the literary unit of 2 Sm 11-12. What does this text revealabout the concept of adultery in the Hebrew bible? (b) Apart from the definition of adultery in the Hebrew, the second target of this research is to see how the understanding of the concept of adultery in the HebrewBible will help Igbo society in fostering her treasured family values, especially, at this moment that modernity and Globalization threaten herhigh sexual-moral values.
