The SDG agenda and human rights

Boekbijdrage - Hoofdstuk

The 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) include a concern with some human rights in some respects, but do not fully reflect the human rights agenda and fail to integrate a human rights approach in the implementation of the Agenda. This chapter maps where a human rights approach has been adopted in the SDGs and where not, and seeks to explain why the international community of States is so reluctant to fully integrate human rights in the implementation of its development agendas (SDGs, MDGs). It also explores whether and how human rights and the SDGs could be mutually reinforcing, notwithstanding the partial integration of both. Do human rights offer guidance for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda? Can the 2030 contribute to the realization of human rights?
