Non-retranslation as a special case of (non?-) reception

Boekbijdrage - Hoofdstuk

Even though the importance of the non-existence of retranslations has been previously acknowledged in Translation Studies, research into the concept of non-retranslation has remained scarce to the present day. This chapter will investigate cases of non-retranslation from Russian into Dutch and try to establish what the absence of retranslations reveals about the (non?-)reception of these works in the receiving culture. The analysis starts from the assumption that several motives and actors in the process may be involved: interest in the author may be lost, the quality of the source text may be considered to be too low or ideologically inappropriate, the first translation may have been of exceptionally high quality, or the target culture may have lost overall interest in the source culture.
