The rational design and validation of a Salmonella Typhimurium vaccin by deletion of virulence genes for use in pigs Ghent University
In this project, extensively characterized, live, attenuated vaccinstrains of Salmonella Typhimurium are made. These strains should evoke a good protection against a Salmonella infection in pigs and be attenuated in humans, animals and the environment. In addition, the pigs vaccinated with these strains, should be serologically distinguishable from pigs infected with field strains of Salmonella in the current national Salmonella pig control ...
Growth, virulence expression and toxin production of Bacillus cereus in the small intestine Ghent University
Taking into account the biodiversity of foodborne B. cereus, information will be gained with regard to growth kinetics, gene expression and toxin production in the gastro-intestinal ecological environment using batch cultures and a Simulator of the Human Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem (SHIME). Detection of toxin production will be elaborated via HPCL-MS, real-time PCR performed for monitoring B. cereus cells and gene expression.
Virulence factors of Aspergillus fumigatus involved in interactions with avian macrophages Ghent University
ASpergillosis is one of the most common infectious diseases that causes dead in birds. In this studies the interactions between Aspergillus fumigatus and avian macrophages will bes tudied an the genes involved will be identified. In a final study the role of these virulence genes in vivo will be assessed.
Virulence mechanisms of Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis in the pathogenesis of chytridiomycosis in amphibians Ghent University
Dramatic amphibian declines are partially caused by the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis. Virtually nothing is known concerning the pathogenesis of the disease, chytridiomycosis. During this project, the virulence mechanisms used by the fungus to cause disease in amphibians will be examined.
Diversity, antimicrobial sensitivity and virulence mechanisms of Helicobacter suis, a pathogen in pigs with zoonotic significance Ghent University
Helicobacter suis is the most prelevant gastric non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter in humans with gastric disease. This agent has also been associated with gastric ulceration in pigs, but the exact role of H. suis in gastric pathology in pigs is not clear. The genomic diversity, antimicrobial sensitivity and virulence mechanims of this agent will be studied.
Capacity building programme on domestic violence, sexual violence and female genital mutilation: A program aiming to improve the identification, the treatment/care/support for and the referral of victims of domestic violence, sexual violence and female ge Ghent University
Given the particularly high prevalence of sexual and domestic violence as well as female genital mutilation in Belgium, it is likely that every healthcare provider working within a Belgian hospital will regularly come into contact with victims of sexual and domestic violence as well as female genital mutilation. Consequently, it is imperative that each of these healthcare providers has the basic competences to better identify violence, ...
Violence work: Creating and Contesting Colonial Authority on the Ground in Africa through Everyday Violence Ghent University
VIOLENCE WORK is a groundbreaking study of everyday violence in Belgian Central Africa—Burundi, Congo, and Rwanda (19th-20th C). Though colonial violence has been studied widely, few have explored how everyday violence enabled colonialism and allowed it to persist. This project combines hitherto neglected source materials and a novel conceptual entry point—violence work(ers)—to foreground the everyday violent practices crucial to creating and ...
Holistic approach to sexual violence in Belgium: Belgian centers sexual violence Ghent University
lnternational is believed that it is desirable to accommodate victims of sexual violence holistic and multidisciplinary. This means that the police and judicial response must be accompanied by a medical and psychosocial aspect and that each of these components are matched up. Research has shown that this is the best guarantee for a positive outcome on each of the areas and for the quality of care, faster recovery of the victim and the ...
Training related to interfamilial violence including sexual violence for hospitals Ghent University
With this project proposal, we want to increase and improve the knowledge and competences concerning the approach of domestic violence in general and sexual violence, especially in Belgian hospitals, with a view to better screening and treatment of female, male and trans patients of all sexual orientations and both minor and adult.
