The long-term establishment of ancient organisms that have undergone whole genome duplications (paleopolyploids) has been exceedingly rare. On the other hand, tens of thousands of now-living species, both plants and animals, are polyploid, and contain multiple copies of their genome (neopolyploids). The apparent paucity of ancient genome duplications and the existence of so many species that are currently polyploid provide an interesting and ...

Research into new 'sensor materials': pH-sensitive dyes in textiles Ghent University
The aim of the project is to obtain a better understanding of the interactions between pH-sensitive dyes and textiles. Both a macroscopic spectral analysis and a general microscopic evaluation will be performed. The dye-fiber interactions, the local distribution, the impulse sensitivity and spectral variations as a function of time and place will be looked at.

Integration of expert knowledge in time-series analytics as leverage for improved monitoring and decision support in complex agricultural systems Ghent University
In the context of smart farming, development of advanced analytics translating raw data into useful information for monitoring and decision support is crucial. Oftentimes, these analytics serve to estimate underlying states (e.g. health or welfare status) of a target subject (e.g. a farm animal) based on sensor time-series data. In an agriculture, these target processes are generally complex and influenced by a multitude of internal (e.g. ...
