Until 2014 the Social Research Department provided education and research on demography, sociology of the life course, sociology of labour, sociology of health and social science methodology.
Cosmopolis is a research centre within the Department of Geography of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and is dedicated to research and teaching in geography, spatial planning and urban design. Committed to pursuing both academic and practice relevant research, Cosmopolis actively engages policy makers, governments, citizen networks and other urban partners to transform knowledge into action.
The ongoing research is concentrated in the fields of: 1. Human Geography: - Urban and social geography; - Urban and regional planning; - Geography of development; - Geography of Health. 2. Physical Geography: - Ice and climate; - Soil erosion and landscape studies. 3. Cartography and Geographic Information Systems.
Research in the early modern history section focuses on the Low Countries between 1500 and 1800 in the wider context of Europe (the Habsburg empires) and the world (the Iberian global empires).
