Neoformed aluminosilicate and phytogenic silica are competitive sinks in the silicon soil-plant cycle Ghent University
In soils, mineral weathering and phytolith dissolution release aqueous monosilicic acid that can be taken up by plant, adsorbed on mineral surfaces, entrapped in neoformed clay minerals, or exported to watersheds. The balance between biotic and abiotic processes determines the fluxes of bioavailable silicon (Si), impacting plant growth and health, and diatoms biomass, hence the oceanic capacity to fix carbon dioxide. Here we quantified this ...
Silicon pool dynamics and biogenic silica export in the Southern Ocean inferred from Si-isotopes Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Water column silicon isotopic signatures (?30Si) of silicic acid (Si(OH)4) in the Southern Ocean were measured along a meridional transect from South Africa (Subtropical Zone) down to 57° S (northern Weddell Gyre). These data are the first reported for a summer transect across the whole Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). ?30Si variations are large in the upper 1000 m, reflecting the effect of the silica pump superimposed upon meridional ...
Can we control the thickness of ultrathin silica layers by hyperthermal silicon oxidation at room temperature? University of Antwerp
Using reactive molecular dynamics simulations by means of the ReaxFF potential, we studied the growth mechanism of ultrathin silica (SiO2) layers during hyperthermal oxidation at room temperature. Oxidation of Si(100){2 × 1} surfaces by both atomic and molecular oxygen was investigated in the energy range 15 eV. The oxidation mechanism, which differs from thermal oxidation, is discussed. In the case of oxidation by molecular O2, silica is ...

Genome-wide transcriptome analyses of silicon metabolism in Phaeodactylum tricornutum reveal the multilevel regulation of silicic acid transporters Ghent University
Plasma texturing and porous silicon mirrors for epitaxial thin film crystalline siliocn solar cells KU Leuven
Thin film silicon solar cells, consisting of an epitaxially grown active layer on a low quality highly doped silicon substrate, incorporate many attractive features usually associated with their sister cells based on bulk silicon. However, the efficiency of the current epitaxial semi-industrial screen printed cells is limited to 11-12% mainly due to optical shortcomings. This paper will give an overview of our work aimed at tackling the 2 most ...
Structure Assignment, Electronic Properties, and Magnetism Quenching of Endohedrally Doped Neutral Silicon Clusters, Si_nCo (n = 10−12) KU Leuven
The structures of neutral cobalt-doped silicon clusters have been assigned by a combined experimental and theoretical study. Size-selective infrared spectra of neutral Si_nCo (n = 10−12) clusters are measured using a tunable IR−UV two-color ionization scheme. The experimental infrared spectra are compared with calculated spectra of low-energy structures predicted at the B3P86 level of theory. It is shown that the Sin_Co (n = 10−12) clusters have ...
