The department DINF is subdivided into a number of research groups: Research group on Artificial Intelligence are ARTI and COMO; SOFT is a research group software languages; WISE is a research group on innovative information systems and human-oriented aspects of applications and application engineering; and STARLab is dealing with databases and semantics of data. In operations research, a challenging research area is combinatorial optimization. Next to exact methods such as branch-and-bound, branch-and-price, also approximation algorithms are studied.
