CanIFreeze project: A tool to increase genetic diversity in Belgian pedigree dogs. Ghent University
The difference in seminal plasma (proteins and extracellular vesicles) between dogs with different sperm freezing resilience, will be investigated. Based on these results the cryopreservation process will be optimized on individual dog level. This optimized protocol will be attempted to start an open semen bank, based on semen donation, to increase the genetic diversity in pedigree dogs on the long-term.

Preimplantation genetic testing in equine test-tube embryos: the advent of a new era in breeding champion horses Ghent University
The high individual value of the horse results in an exponential increase in the number of in vitro produced (IVP) equine embryos. Yet, preimplantation genetic testing (PGT), involving the prelevation of cells from the embryo for genetic profiling prior to embryo transfer, is still limited to sex determination and the detection of a few monogenic traits, using multiplex PCR with variable results. The goal of this project is to develop a ...

European Oocyte Biology Research Innovation Training Net Ghent University
The hallmark of successful mammalian reproduction is the fusion between a haploid spermatozoon and a metaphase II oocyte. The generation of such an oocyte involves a series of steps whereby germinal-vesicle oocytes (in which the nuclei are intact) at prophase I are stimulated to resume meiosis and mature to metaphase II, a sequence of events that prepares the oocyte for fertilization. Although the treatment of infertility by Assisted ...

Effects of sperm stressors on sperm epigenetics and subsequent embryo development in cattle Ghent University
At present, breeding companies are having concerns about the possible impact of natural heat stress on animal fertility. The goal of our project is to address those concerns and to determine the effects of increased temperature on bull fertility.
