Automatic processes in psychopathology and health related behaviour Ghent University
Recent research has shown that automatic processes play an important role in psychopathology and health related behavior. The aim of the FWO research community is to promote contacts between researchers who have made an important contribution to this research.
Context matters: Unraveling polarization and mobilization processes underlying intergroup tolerance and prejudice Ghent University
Conflicts based on the often strained relationships between ethnic-cultural groups in society regularly flare up (cf. the recent Black Lives Matter protests). Similarly, the topic of intergroup relations has been on the forefront of social and political psychology research since the 1950’s. However, this scholarly focus on reducing prejudice and promoting tolerance often included either individual difference (e.g., social-ideological beliefs) ...

Perfectionism as a risk factor for eating disorders in adolescents: examining mediation processes Ghent University
Research has proven a systematic relationship between perfectionism and eating disorders. In this project we will examine the antecedent status of perfectionism in relation to eating disorders using longitudinal and experimental research. From the Self-Determination theory we also examine which mediators operate in the relationship between perfectionism and eating disorders and the influence of these factors on the therapeutic process.

Uncertain about my abilities. How stereotype-related processes affect the clarity, confidence, and stability of the ability self-concept KU Leuven
While researchers have been aware of the disproportionate drop-out among minoritized groups during crucial stages of their education and work trajectory for some time, the potential role of certainty of the ability self-concept in relation to these unequal outcomes has been underexamined. This is despite indications that the ability to clearly, confidently, and consistently view one’s abilities is crucial for pursuit in a domain, and ...
Understanding Dynamic Interpersonal Emotional Processes in Romantic Relationships KU Leuven
The quality of romantic relationships predicts a variety of health outcomes, ranging from mortality over psychopathology to the speed of wound healing (see e.g., Robles, Slatcher, Trombello, & McGinn, 2014). One key mechanism underlying these associations is the emotions that are experienced in the relationship (Sbarra & Coan, 2018). Romantic partners are thought to influence each other’s emotions often, intensely, and in many ...
Implicit processes in adult attachment Ghent University
Using implict measures and experimental paradigms, we examined the role of automatic processes (i.e., selective attention, approach-avoidance tendencies) and representations (i.e., proximity-distance goals and self-representations) in attachment system functioning. These cognitive-motivational processes were systematically investigated in relation to context (threat versus neutral) and individual differences in attachment style (anxiety ...
The power of goal-directed processes in the causation of emotional and other actions KU Leuven
People often engage in behavior that is not in their best interest. For instance, they engage in unhealthy behaviors such as smoking, commit action slips such as taking a wrong habitual route, or they become aggressive even when they risk a high cost (e.g., retaliation or ruining a relationship). To make sense of these so-called suboptimal actions, theorists have come up with dual process models that distinguish between (a) a stimulus-driven ...
