The present application relates to the use of platelet derived growth factor β (PDGFRβ) as a biomarker for fibrosis. More specifically, the invention is directed to in vitro methods of diagnosing fibrosis, diagnosing the severity of fibrosis, determining the prognosis of fibrosis and/or assessing the efficacy of a therapeutic against fibrosis based on the detection and quantification of soluble PDGFRβ (sPDGFRβ) in biological fluid samples.
