Simulation of Airborne Wind Energy Systems in the Atmospheric Boundary Layer KU Leuven
Airborne wind energy is the umbrella appellation for tethered airborne devices harvesting energy from high altitude wind resources. This emerging technology is the breeding ground for a diverse ecosystem of companies and research institutes developing numerous system archetypes and prototypes. The wakes of airborne wind energy systems (AWES) are commonly neglected for the small-scale prototypes currently under development. Consequently, ...
Numerical modelling of near-field and far-field wake effects of a farm of wave energy coverters using irregular short-crested waves and the effect of wind regeneration in time-dependent wave propagation models. Ghent University
Designing a Wave Energy Converters (WECs) park layout requires the study of the interaction between the devices of a 'farm' layout (near-field effects) and the influence of wake effects behind a WEC-park (far-field effects). These park effects will be investigated by means of MILDwave, a numerical wave propagation model, which uses a sponge layer technique in order to simulate absorption and radiation of a converter.
Participatory decision-making in activation: contradictio in terminis or conditio sine qua non? KU Leuven
Over the past decades implementation and street-level bureaucracy research has shown forcefully that policy implementation is an integral part of the political policy process as a result of the discretion of street-level bureaucrats. For instance in the field of activation policy multiple studies have shown how caseworkers assign more resources to unemployed clients who have higher chances on the labour market (creaming) and park others (e.g. ...
NIR-Sensitivity-Enhanced Gated Image Sensor for Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy (FLIM) KU Leuven
Because of the deep tissue penetration and the lower influence from the autofluorescence background, fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) in the near-infrared (NIR) range becomes attractive for bioimaging. However, to reconstruct the fluorescence decay profile with the time-resolved technique, repetitive short excitation pulses are required, and a large number of light exposures easily result in the photobleaching of the ...

High speed, radiation-tolerant optical and wireline communication circuits KU Leuven
Introduction Radiation-hard high-speed data links play an ever-growing role in modern High Energy Physics experiments. The state-of-the-art, marked by the lpGBT development for the LHC Phase-II upgrades, supports 10 Gb/s transmission and withstands radiation levels of 1 MGy and 10e+15 neq/cm². This is however already insufficient for some of the HL-LHC detectors where, for example, the pixel optoelectronics installed on the first strip layer ...
The functional role of the frontal face patches in face perception. KU Leuven
Facial information is critically important for guiding interactions among conspecifics of many social species, including humans. In primates, an extensive network of interconnected brain areas processes such facial information. This face-processing network comprises several well-studied ventral stream areas, but also some prefrontal regions whose functional characteristics, connectivity and functional role in face perception are severely ...

Do schools and teachers leave their mark? Studies on long-term effects of schools and teachers on student outcomes KU Leuven
In the field of educational effectiveness research, teacher and school effects are most often studied in the short term. Long-term school and teacher effects are less often studied and the findings are inconsistent. The objective of this dissertation is to study long-term school and teacher effects. The main question is: do schools or teachers still influence students’ outcomes at the moment these students already changed school or teacher? ...
